The MSA is currently associated with three International Programs.
1. The MSA/University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Summer Sicily Program (University of Messina), June 3-29, 2010
This highly successful program now in its 11th year is run in cooperation with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. UMASS Dartmouth has total academic control of the program including the awarding of academic credits, selection of courses and appointment of faculty. The MSA has responsibility for programmatic organization and logistical support. The MSA organizes local housing, classrooms, field trips, local transportation and serves as liaison to the University of Messina, the host institution. While most students participating in the program come from the University of Massachusetts, participants from other institutions are welcome. Students live in University Housing, earn 6 credits (selecting from Art History, History, or Painting) and participate in fieldtrips allowing them to experience the seminal cultural and historical sites of the island. The program also welcomes the participation of non-traditional students (and no prior painting experience is needed to enroll in the painting course).
2. The Nocciano Institute for Arts and Culture, June 30-July 14, 2010
This program founded in 2004 is for high school/college students and K-12 Educators. Many of you were present at the 2003 Congress at the Central European University in Budapest when the MSA received an award from the Robert Schuman Foundation and European Parliament for its contributions to International Learning and Understanding. The MSA was also granted use of the renovated 12th Century Castle in Nocciano, Italy to support its mission in international education. Institute Workshops are taught in this beautiful Castle while students and instructors are housed with local families. These Workshops are non-credit enrichment experiences but it is possible for students to obtain college credits and for educators to receive professional development credit. Currently students may select from painting, language, or photography but we are eager to extend the number of workshops being offered.
We extend to MSA members an invitation to organize workshops (minimum of 7 participants) to participate in the Nocciano Institute. In return, we offer a free trip to Nociano including airfare, housing and meals. While many workshop topics are welcome, we are particularly interested in Theatre, Drama, Dance & Music (both vocal and instrumental).
3. Portuguese Language, History, and Culture, University of Évora, Portugal, June 22-July 15, 2010
We are eager to receive your help in making this program a success. José Alberto Gomes Machado, President of the 2007 MSA Congress in Évora worked with us to construct this program. We were aided by members of the University of Évora faculty, in particular Professor Ana Clara Birrento of the Departamento de Linguística e Literaturas who now serves as Program Coordinator. Students receive undergraduate credits from the University of Évora and experience fieldtrips to Lisbon, Coimbra and other important sites in Portugal. Please help us find students for this wonderful program.
