PRE-CONGRESS COACH EXCURSION TO SINTRA, PINA PALACE AND CABO DA ROCA
This year, instead of the traditional MSA Pre-Congress walking tour, we will offer an exciting excursion to two famous sites near Lisbon. First Cabo da Roca, Europe’s most western point, often referred to as “the edge of the world.” We will also visit the beautiful town of Sintra, and tour the extraordinary Pina Palace.
The Pena Palace site dates to the middle ages when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the site above Sintra. Later, there was a monastery that was destroyed in the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755. In 1833 King Ferdinand purchased the land with the intention of building a palace that would serve as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. Construction took place between 1842 and 1854 with the result being one of the most unique structures in Europe. In 1889 the Palace was purchased by the Portuguese State and following the 1910 Revolution it was classified as a national monument and transformed into the popular museum it is today. The 14 Euro admission ticket to the Pena Palace is included in the $75 price of the excursion.
