HISTORIC WALKING TOUR OF VALLETTA
WEDNESDAY, MAY 31, 2017 10:00 – 12:30
The Knights of St John were driven from Rhodes by the Ottoman Turks in 1522 and were given Malta by the Emperor Charles V in 1530. In 1556 a Christian army of 8000 including 500 knights defended the Island against an Ottoman force of over 40,000 for four months. The defense of the Island was led by the 70-year-old Grand Master Jean de la Valletta.
Following the siege, the Grand Master in 1566 ordered the construction of a more defendable city which was named Valletta in his honor. Many of the great structures and monuments remain in Valletta today, which you will see on the Walking Tour such as St. Johns Co Cathedral, the Barrakka Gardens, and the Grand Masters Palace, now the official palace of the President of Malta.
Mrs. Henry Frendo, who will also join us on the Congress Post Tour, will guide the Tour. We will have headsets available for the tour.
