Second Call for Papers 2025

2025 University of Gibraltar

The 27th Annual International Congress of the Mediterranean Studies Association will be held May 28 – 31, 2025, at the University of Gibraltar. We are now accepting proposals for individual papers, panel discussions, and complete sessions on all subjects related to the Mediterranean region and Mediterranean cultures around the world from all historical periods. The official language of the Congress is English, but we also welcome complete panel sessions in any Mediterranean language.

The Congress will open with a plenary session and reception on the evening of Wednesday, May 28. Over the next three days, we expect that 150-200 scholarly papers will be delivered before an international audience of scholars, academics, experts, and master’s and PhD students in a wide range of fields.

Guidelines for Submission of Proposals for Individual Papers or Panel Sessions

1.Individual Paper. You may submit a proposal for an individual 20-minute paper on any Mediterranean topic or theme.Papers accepted for presentation will be placed in a 3 or 4-person two-hour session, grouped thematically, with a designated session chair who will briefly introduce speakers and facilitate discussion. Submit a 150-word abstract in English for your proposed paper, a list of up to five key-words describing your paper, a one-page CV, your name, institution, email, regular address, and phone number. We are always in need of panel chairs to introduce speakers and facilitate discussion. When you submit your individual paper proposal, you will be asked whether you are interested in being considered to chair a panel. Please note that as English is the official language of the Congress, individual papers should be delivered in English to ensure that they are accessible to everyone in attendance.

2.Panel Session. You may submit a proposal for a complete four-paper session or round table panel on any Mediterranean topic or theme. Sessions are two hours and typically include four papers, each lasting twenty minutes, a chair, and an optional commentator. (For examples of paper, round-table panels, and session topics, and the range of subjects, see programs from previous congresses available on our website www.mediterraneanstudies.org) Given the challenge of finding an ample number of rooms at the conference venue, we strongly encourage submission of 4-paper sessions. If you submit a 3-paper session, the organizers reserve the right to add a fourth paper on a related topic from the general call for papers. If your participants fail to register by the deadline, the Program Committee will replace them with other papers on a related topic. Submit a 150-word abstract in English for each paper, and a one-page CV for each participant, including chairs and commentators, as well as each participant's name, institution, email, regular address, and phone number. Proposals for complete sessions or roundtables need to include the chair's name. If the panel will be run in a language other than English, please include titles and abstracts in both English and the language used for the panel.

3.Deadline for Submissions and Notification of Acceptance. The deadline for preliminary submissions is March 1, 2025.Submissions received after March 1, but before April 1, will be considered if space is available in the program. After April 1 papers will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with papers accepted after April 1 appearing in an addendum to the program. Submissions are reviewed by the program committee on a continuing rolling basis.Notification about the status of a paper can generally be expected within two weeks of submission.

4.Language of Presentation. Please note that as English is the official language of the Congress, submissions for individual papers should be delivered in English to ensure that they are accessible to everyone in attendance.Panels may be run in English or another language. If the panel will be presented in a language other than English, please include titles and abstracts in both English and the language used for the panel.

5.Dates of Congress. The MSA will hold paper sessions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 29 - 31, 2025. Saturday is a full conference day, followed by the closing reception. You should not plan to travel before Sunday morning unless you are certain that your paper is not on Saturday. We will honor special time requests for medical, religious, or other serious reasons if the request is made by March 1, 2025. Special scheduling requests received after this time present special challenges for the organizers. The conference program with the schedule of papers will be posted in early April.

6.Remote Participation. We strive to offer a rich and stimulating in-person conference for participants. However, we recognize that there may be exceptional cases where a participant is unable to attend in person. In such cases, participants should notify the program committee as soon as possible, and before April 15, 2025, so that accommodations for remote participation can be arranged.

7.Submission of Proposals. All proposals for individual papers or panel sessions must be submitted here through the MSA website.
