The Mediterranean Studies Association's 8th annual International Congress, "Sicily, Europe, and the Mediterranean" will be held on May 25-28, 2005 at the Università degli Studi di Messina. As is the case each year, papers and sessions on all subjects relating to the Mediterranean region and Mediterranean cultures around the world from all periods are encouraged. Following a day of optional excursions the Congress will open with a plenary session and reception on the evening of May 25. Over the course of the next days over 200 scholarly papers will be delivered before an international audience of about 300 scholars, academics, and experts in a wide range of fields. Held in the center of Messina at the Università degli Studi di Messina, the official languages of the Congress are Italian and English. In addition, complete sessions in any Mediterranean language are welcome. A number of special events are being planned for Congress participants that will highlight the unique cultural aspects of Sicily. An optional five-day coach excursion of Sicily is also being planned following the close of the Congress. Selected revised papers will be considered for publication in the Association's journal, Mediterranean Studies.



1. You must be a member of the Mediterranean Studies Association for 2005. Dues are $40. Dues for Editorial Board members are at the reduced rate of $30. If you are not a member for 2005, please pay your dues as part of the registration process below.

2. Fill out the registration form. Registration fees are non-refundable. Indicate any optional expenses such as the Wednesday excursions or the post-congress tour through Sicily. Please note if you require audio/visual equipment. You may use the online form or send in a form.

3. Information on the congress hotels will be available soon.

 

1. REGISTRATION

Registration – Everyone attending the conference is required to complete an official registration form. Individuals not presenting a paper or chairing a session may either pre-register or register on site. All conference participants, however, must pre-register. THE PRE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MAY 1, 2005. One form is to be filled out for each person; photocopies are acceptable. Before February 1 the registration fee is $105, and $40 for a spouse or guest. After February 1 the registration fee is $130, and $40 for a spouse or guest. At the Congress the registration fee is $155, and $40 for a spouse or guest. REGISTRATION FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. (US currency only.)

NOTE: The $40 fee is for a companion who will not be attending the sessions but who will be attending the evening social events and/or a tour (for which tickets are required). These guests do not receive a name badge or registration packet. They do receive tickets in their companion's full registration packet.

Registrants must pay in US dollars and are urged to use a US bank so as to avoid exorbitant bank fees.  Registrants who wish to pay with a check drawn on a foreign bank may do so, but must add $8 to the total to cover bank fees.

HOW TO GET TO MESSINA

TRAVELING BY AIR
Although Messina does not have its own airport, it can be easily reached by flying either to Reggio Calabria or to Catania. You will need to connect through either Milan Malpensa or via Roma Fiumicino.

Reggio Calabria. "Aereoporto dello Stretto." From the airport take the bus "Cavallieri" to Messina and get off at Piazzale Cavallotti very near to Piazza Repubblica - Stazione Centrale. The bus waits for the arrival of each plane.

Catania. "Aereoporto Fontana Rossa." From the airport take the "SAIS" bus to Messina and get off at Piazza Repubblica - Stazione Centrale. The first bus leaves at 08:45 and the last at 20:15. Cost is € 7.50 / 12.00 (roundtrip).

Palermo. "Aereoporto Punta Raisi." Take the bus to the Stazione Centrale in Palermo and then take another bus or the train to arrive at the Stazione Centrale in Messina (about € 10.25)


Hotels — NOTE: Due to much confusion and frustration, we advise you to book directly with the hotels. Prices will vary. Of course, you are under no obligation to stay in these hotels; however, we have negotiated favorable rates and it will be to your advantage to stay with other congress participants. There is no bus service provided specifically for participants to the University. All the hotels are within walking distance, with the exception of the Paradis Hotel which is three miles away. FULL- no more places available. Wednesday, May 25, walking-tour (including ferry) to Reggio di Calabria to visit the National Museum (which features the spectacular Greek 5th c. Riace bronze statues of warriors). This tour will gather at the Central Train Station in front of the main entrance at 8:30. We will take the 9:15 hydrofoil to Reggio. Marilyn Stokstad will be our guide for the museum. Lunch will be on your own. Return will also be flexible, but a 3:05 return on the hydrofoil is recommended.

This tour will have two pick-up points: 9:00 at the Central Train Station in front of the main entrance, and 9:15 across the street from the Jolly Hotel. The bus will leave Taormina at 3:00 to return to Messina.
