 Batalha Monastery was built In commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota in which the Portuguese defeated the Castilians preserving their independence. The Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory (Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória), is one of the best original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style
