Town of Tomar

The main church of the Convent of Tomar was constructed by the Knights Templar starting in 1118
and continued until end of the century.

The Convent of Christ has 8 cloisters. The Cloisters of John III was built 1557-1591. This magnificent, two-story cloister connects the dormitory of the monks to the church, and is considered one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Portugal

Knights Templars fortress in Tomar; the fortifications were built in 1190 to successfully withstand the Almohad invasion

During the second quarter of the 13th century, Tomar was transferred into the control of the Templars, becoming its seat. The castle became an integral part of the defense system created by the Templars to secure the border of the young Christian Kingdom of Portugal against the Moors
