El Escorial Day 3 Morning
Madrid Afternoon
We will leave Chinchon in the morning of Day three; it is only a 30 to 45 minute drive to Madrid. Since we cannot check into the hotel there until 3pm, we are going to El Escorial.
Only 28 miles northwest of Madrid, El Escorial was built between 1563 and 1584 by King Phillip II. El Escorial is the largest Renaissance building in the world. It functions as a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school, and hospital and has been the burial site for most of the Spanish Kings of the last five centuries.

Modern Madrid was founded in the 9th century. In 1561, the Capital was transferred from Toledo to Madrid, and the city of 3.4 million remains the Spanish Capital today. Among the many places to see in Madrid are The Royal Palace, Royal Theater, the Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park and a walk along the Grand Via with its many beautiful buildings.
